The Department of Pediatrics and the Neuromuscular Unit of the Catholic University in Rome have a longstanding experience in the study of cognitive disorders in several rare disorders, including neuromuscular disorders. The team of Psychologist and Child Psychiatrists has been involved in the clinical follow up and in research aspects relative to phenotype-genotype correlation in both Duchenne muscular dystrophy and in other rare disorders such as RASopaties.

The neuromuscular unit is the largest pediatric tertiary care centre in Italy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy and has been leading the Italian network on natural history in Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Eugenio Mercuri

Profile
Professor Mercuri has been leading national and international networks on natural history in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. His past research activities include several studies on phenotype-genotype correlation in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. His area of interest in DMD has also included the assessment of cognitive and behavioural aspects in boys with different mutations in the dystrophin gene and the assessment of other aspects of central nervous system involvement, such as epilepsy.

Role in the project
Coordinator of the WP5 focused on deep functional phenotyping of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Becker muscular dystrophy patients, As part of this role he will be responsible for coordinating activities in the first months aimed at  optimizing protocols and training, and to supervise data collection among the centers and,  in the last few months of the project, to coordinate data analysis and publication and dissmination plans.
